Gin became very popular in England after the government created a market for poor quality grain that was unfit to be used in brewing beer by allowing unlicensed gin production and at the same time imposing a heavy duty on all imported spirits. Stir for those of you who dislike shaking your martinis, you can stir. Just prior to the 1900s, there were several recipe books published that listed the recipe for the common martinez, but gave it the name of martini.

Twist a twist is a garnish made from the rind of a lemon or lime usually a lemon. Straight up: drink is mixed with ice & then strained into glassstrainer: wire gadget with a spring around it that fits over the top of your mixing container so you can strain ice or pulp when pouring into a serving glass. Try each of these until you find one you like. Lemon juice. Take pre-chilled glass and fill with crushed ice, or ice water.
