To create savory martinis, it was common to use bitters. As their name suggest, bitters are a bitter additive made from dozens, if not hundreds of herbs, spices and plants. Until the 1970s, cocktails were made predominantly with gin, whiskey, or rum, and rarely with vodka. In the past few years, vodka has become quite fashionable -- and with the many brands available, vodka is in plentiful supply.

Regardless of the ingredients, it is now the martini glass that qualifies a cocktail as specifically a martini. While James Bond was reckless with his women and rough on enemy agents, he was quite percise about his cocktail - asking that it be shaken not stirred.

Learning about the specific nature of the cocktail ingredients is key to becoming an expert mixologist. For example, you should know that for (generally aside from) insignificant amounts of flavorings, vodka consists of water and alcohol ethanol. Gin is not so much distilled, as it is constructed. When it comes to Gin, every distrillery has its own very secret mix of ingredients that create the end result. Regardless of whether you prefer gin, vodka or a non-alcoholic martini, remember that style is key to a successful cocktail.
