A Review of Cocktail Martini Shakers |
|
| |
Made of metal, glass, plastic or a combination of materials, a cocktail shaker is used to shake a drink with ice before serving. There are two main benefits to using ANY cocktail shaker: the ability to effectively "incorporate" (or combine) the elements of a martini or Cosmopolitan cocktail and the ability to quickly chill the drink before it is poured into an iceless martini glass.
Today, there are two major shaker types. Here's the "good news" and "bad news" about each:
Cobbler Cocktail Shaker
This is the classic 3-part cocktail shaker that most people have in their homes. It's usually comprised of a metal tumbler, a snug fitting lid, and a small cap that fits over the lid and covers the strainer that is built into the lid.
To use a Cobbler Cocktail Shaker , first remove the top two sections. Add your alcohol and ice, and then replace top sections. After shaking well, remove just the cap that is on the very top of the shaker, to reveal the built-in strainer, and then simply strain the contents into the martini glass.
The DOWNSIDE of using a Cobbler Cocktail Shaker is that the strainer section can get stuck on the lower metal tumble because of uneven expansion and contraction of the two metal parts, sticky residue, or plain old bad manufacturing.

Boston Cocktail Shaker
A variation on the Cobbler Cocktail Shaker , the Boston Cocktail Shaker has only two parts -- a metal mixing tumbler and a smaller glass tumbler. Unlike the Cobbler Cocktail Shaker , the Boston Cocktail Shaker has no built-in strainer.
To do it the " Boston " way, you measure your ingredients and ice into the glass tumbler portion. Next you'll need to carefully position the inverted metal tumbler over the top; giving it a swift and firm slap with your hand to seal the two sections together.
Fitting the two pieces together snugly is the DOWNSIDE of this style of cocktai shaker. If you don't get the seal just right, you'll have a great martiniā¦but it will end up all over the floor (or you!), instead of in a martini glass .
If forming the seal was a downside of the Boston Cocktail Shaker , breaking the seal is the DEEP DOWNSIDE since the wrong move can crack the glass. To separate the two pieces of a Boston Cocktail Shaker , you'll have to hold the metal tumbler firmly, and slap it just below the rim, right about the point where the glass comes in contact with it with the heel of your hand.
A cocktail shaker is a reflection of your good taste and the best way to make a martini that tastes good.
