Standard martini recipes with a twist |
 |
| |
Lets begin with a few basic martini recipes. Simple and elegant martinis made with the most basic ingredients can be a delight. When the mood strikes, we often enjoy the crisp, clean taste of a traditional martini. Although we classify these drinks as standard, in our world, even the standards border on unique.
All of our recipes are tested and "MartiniGuy" approved in our own martini laboratory. Although we've studied and mixed from many recipes, for our own recipes we start with a blank slate. You'll also note that we specify a particular gin, vodka or brand of ingredient. While there are many good options, we are simply providing the details that we've determined will yield an amazing martini. Feel free to substitute.
In our recipes, you'll note that we sometimes pour "heavy." While testing, we are often mixing to yield three or four cocktails--adjust yours accordingly. Sometimes include some special tips for atmosphere, music or mood, and we'd prefer that you follow these steps to a T! Remember to pick up some excellent martini glasses to round out your mixing. |

Standard gin martini |
|
| |
Many contend that the gin martini is the only mix fitting to wear the name "martini," and all other cocktails are impostors. We love a good gin martini, but we say "hogwash" to the naming issue.
Ingredients
- 6 ounces of freezing Bombay Sapphire or Mercury gin.
- 5 drops of Noilly Pratt dry vermouth.
- 2 small twists of lemon rind.
- 2 Picholine olives.
The mix
- Fill a glass martini shaker about 3/4 full of cracked, clean ice.
- Pour your gin into the shaker and let stand for sixty seconds. Count down from sixty to zero.
- Approach your shaker with caution, and lovingly apply the lid.
- Shake, shake, shake. About fifteen, vigorous, diagonal shakes should do the trick.
- Put that shaker down and get two well chilled martini glasses from the fridge or freezer. Allow the shaker to rest for about another sixty seconds.
- Into each glass drop two drops of vermouth (the fifth drop is just for good luck).
- Each glass gets a twist and an olive (the olive is optional--though we love em).
- Strain your very chilly gin into each glass.
- Chink and enjoy.

Standard vodka martini |
|
| |
Although this martini will certainly qualify as a standard martini, you'll often find that every bartender will create the drink with a slight (or perhaps not so slight) variation. This is a MartiniGuy favorite, and quite often my default drink of choice.
Ingredients
- 3 ounces of freezing Absolut or Chopin vodka.
- 1 teaspoon of Noilly Pratt vermouth.
- 3 Picholine olives stuffed with crumbled bleu cheese.
- 1 fancy schmancy toothpick.
The mix
- To set the appropriate mixing mood, we suggest either some light jazz, or any Dean Martin music.
- Pour your vodka into a well chilled shaker and let stand for sixty seconds. Count down from sixty to zero.
- While counting down, drop your vermouth into a frozen martini glass, swirl the vermouth around the glass and then pour it out.
- Shake, shake, shake. About fifteen, vigorous, diagonal shakes followed by swirling the shaker a few times. If you get some "hip action" going (hula style) your guests are sure to enjoy the entertainment value.
- Strain your freezing vodka into your glass.
- Spear your olives and gently slide them into the glass.
- Have a seat in your favorite chair. Sip and relax.

Dirty martini |
|
| |
A dirty martini is a delicious treat. We enjoy the flavor, the color, and the fact that our olives are a bit familiar with their surroundings. I've included an option for making this martini a bit more spicy--which we truly love.
Ingredients
- 6 ounces of freezing Absolut or Absolut Peppar.
- 1 teaspoon of Noilly Pratt vermouth.
- 6 Picholine olives stuffed with crumbled bleu cheese.
- Toasted almond slivers.
- 2 fancy schmancy toothpicks.
The mix
- Pour your Vodka into a well chilled shaker and let stand for thirty seconds.
- While counting down, drop your vermouth into 2 frozen martini glasses, swirl the vermouth around the glasses and then pour it out.
- Shake, shake, shake. About twenty, vigorous, diagonal shakes followed by swirling the shaker a few times.
- Strain your freezing vodka into your glasses.
- Insert an almond sliver into each stuffed olive and spear 3 per toothpick.
- Spear your olives and gently slide them into the glass.
- Sip the goodness and be proud!
Feel free to substitute the almond/bleu cheese stuffed olives with jalapeno stuffed olives when mixing this drink with Absolut Peppar. It's a wonderful appetite whetter.

Cosmopolitan |
|
| |
Though the Cosmopolitan may not be considered a traditional martini, we've decided to include it here because it is often a most requested recipe. I've personally served up hundreds of these cocktails with the same sheer delight from the person receiving this delicious elixir. I would suggest sticking to the measures we've outlined. This mix will yield two Cosmos.
Ingredients
- 4 ounces of freezing Skyy or Stolichnaya vodka.
- 1 ounce of refrigerator chilled Cointreau.
- 1 ounce of Absolut Citron vodka.
- 2 orange rind twists.
- 2 very, very thin orange slices.
- 1 lime cut in half.
- 3 ounces of cranberry juice.
- 1 ounce of pomegranate juice.
- 2 ounces of Naked orange juice.
- 4 drops of Amaretto.
The mix
- Fill a glass shaker (we suggest a Boston style) 1/2 full with cracked ice.
- Turn on your hi-tech stereo system and impress your guest(s). We suggest a CD by "Gontiti" titled "Sunday Market." It's an excellent musical selection.
- Into your shaker, pour your vodkas and cranberry juice.
- Give the shaker a good ten or fifteen shakes.
- Add your Cointreau, pomegranate juice and orange juice.
- Squeeze in the juice of half a lime.
- Another twenty (thirty if you are up to it) shakes.
- Strain your beautiful cocktail into two frozen cosmo or martini glasses.
- Each drink gets 2 drops of Amaretto.
- Gently float a slice of orange on top of each drink.
- On top of each orange, delicately lay a rind twist.
- Take a breath and be prepared to make more...it's a given.
If you'd like to serve this wonderful drink alcohol-free, we offer a delicious version in our alcohol-free section.
